THIS WEEK’S QUESTION…?

Do I need 3 Years of GP Experience to get AHPRA Registration?

If you’re applying for your first job in Australia, and it happens to be a GP position then you have 3 options of registration:

  • Limited Registration- Area of Need
  • Limited Registration- Post Graduate Training and Supervised Practice
  • Provisional Registration

Limited AHPRA Registration- Area of Need requires you to have 3 years of GP experience. This will undergo an assessment by AHPRA, not unlike the assessment that RACGP do. I do suggest having your RACGP time assessment completed prior to applying for this type of registration.

Limited AHPRA Registration- Post Graduate Training and Supervised Practice does not require you to have 3 years of experience. However, please keep in mind that AHPRA will still consider your experience when they assess your application. In our experience, it will still be a reason for refusal.

Provisional AHPRA Registration does not require you to have 3 years of experience. However, please keep in mind that AHPRA will still consider your experience when they assess your application. In our experience, it could still be a reason for refusal.

Our suggestions always come from the experience our team have had and what our doctors provide us- if your story supports or contradicts what we’re saying here, we would love to hear from you!!
