Does a spousal exemption affect 19AA?

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION…?

Does a spousal exemption affect 19AA?

The Short Answer…

No. A spousal exemption will not help you with 19AA and getting an exemption from requiring a 3GA program.

But Why?

The Spousal Exemption is a provision of exemptions which relates directly back to the 19AB provisions.

19AB requires a GP to work in a DWS to be able to access Medicare.

19AA on the other hand, requires GPs with Australian PR or Citizenship to work on an approved 3GA program to be able to access Medicare. The only ‘exemption’ to this is SAPP and your family situation (unless medically life threatening) will not be taken into consideration.
