In a constantly changing environment, we summarise the most important updates for General Practitioners. 

This week’s summary includes updates from:

Total Coronavirus Cases – 

There have been a total of 27,096 cases in Australia. Of that 24,644 have recovered and 888 have died. There have been 19 new cases in the last 24 hours, with 370 current active cases.

PEP Applications – 

Applications for RACGP PEP open on the 5th of October 2020 and close on the 22nd of October 2020.

Updates to MBS Item Schedule for November 1st–

Psychiatry: Item 293 is being amended to clarify that it should not be billed if item 359 has been provided in the preceding 12 months.

Radiation Oncology: A consequential amendment to brachytherapy item 15338 will be made to update the item in line with the amendments to urology item 37220.

Diagnostic Imaging: Nine imaging items have been amended to remove the co-claiming restriction between items 55248, 55252, 55274, 55276, 55278, 55280, 55282, 55284 and 55292 and 55880, 55881, 55882, 55883, 55884, 55885, 55886, 55887, 55888, 55889, 55890, 55891, 55892, 55893, 55894 or 55895. This will allow (where clinically appropriate) for these items to be claimed.


Updated standards for Interns–

The Medical Board of Australia (the Board) will waive the usual rotation requirements for interns in 2020.

The Board will accept the following supervised clinical experience for general registration:

  • at least 40 weeks full-time equivalent service (a reduction of seven weeks to allow for isolation/sick leave etc.)
  • the clinical experience can take place in accredited and non-accredited positions
  • the requirement for the usual rotations of medicine, surgery and emergency medical care are waived. The Board will accept clinical experience in any supervised rotations.

At the moment, AHPRA hasn’t confirmed whether they will accept Online English Language Tests, so keep an ear out. 


The AMC MCQ Examinations have commenced on a staged basis and where possible. 

AMC Clinical-

AMC Clinical examinations website has returned back to normal, however there has been no official update as to whether the AMC Clinical is recommencing. We have contacted AMC to find out for you!


  • AGPT is currently closed for the year
  • RVTS is currently closed for the year
  • PEP is opening on 5th of October
  • ACRRM Independent Pathway is currently closed for the year.
