I have no GP Experience…how can I be a GP in Australia?
In a lot of countries, being a General Practitioner appears to be an easy transition, which means when Doctors come to Australia, they are often surprised they cannot get a GP job straight away. In Australia, AHPRA are very strict about providing registration to those Doctors who intend to Practice as a GP.
AHPRA is the Registration Authority which means they have to be careful about allowing Doctors registration. Working as a General Practitioner is a very solo role. Your Supervisor is onsite with you at all times however, it is you in the consulting room seeing patients. AHPRA want to ensure you have the support you need to be successful and that the patient is safe.
If you want to practice as a General Practitioner in Australia, but you have no GP experience then your best option is to start work within the hospital system. This gives you a great understanding of the Australian medical system and a peek at Medicare (perhaps more than a peek in some jobs). Working your rotations and applying for General AHPRA Registration, there are some great training programs that help you transition in General Practice.
There is no experience requirement for those holding Provisional AHPRA Registration; however, in our experience AHPRA do not appear to be approving any applications for Doctors that have no General Practice experience.
We know it is frustrating. If you need help with covering letters, CV’s or Selection Criteria then please contact our team. We are here to help.
