I’m an IMG with Permanent Residency, what are my restrictions?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK…

I’m an IMG with Permanent Residency, what are my restrictions?

An IMG – that is, someone who completed their degree outside of Australia or New Zealand or someone who enrolled in their Australian degree whilst they were a temporary resident – is restricted by:

19AB which is a requirement to work in a DPA (formerly DWS) location. You can discover what locations are DPA via the Health Workforce Locator. You can discover how to check the Health Workforce Locator in this video: https://youtu.be/XDwgUeYnFv4

If you’re also a permanent resident, or Australian Citizen and you have not completed your Fellowship exams then you will have the additional restriction of:

19AA which is the requirement to work on an approved 3GA training program until you’ve completed your Fellowship exams and been recognised as a GP Specialist. You can read about the 3GA programs here: https://peoplemedical.com.au/19aa-and-the-3ga-programs-2020-update/
