My GP experience is less than 3 years- Will I get registration for a GP Job?

This Week’s Question…?

My GP experience is less than 3 years- Will I get registration for a GP Job?

If you’re applying for Limited AHPRA Registration (Only AMC Part 1), in our experience- No. AHPRA requires you to have 3 Years of equivalent GP experience to be granted Limited AHPRA Registration, Area of Need (AANG-30). We are also seeing applications for Post Grad Training (ALPS-30) rejected if you don’t have solid GP experience.

If you’re applying for Provisional AHPRA Registration (AMC Part 1 & Part 2), we have seen that AHPRA are applying the theory that you need recent GP experience to be approved to have registration for a GP position. This means that if you have no GP experience, despite holding your AMC Certificate it is still likely that you will be rejected. If you have less than 3 years, it will depend on your recency of practice and the strength of your supporting documents as to whether you will be approved for registration.

If you have less than 3 years of recent (within the last 12 months) GP experience, your safest route is to apply for a hospital job and work until you hold General AHPRA Registration before transitioning into General Practice.

While it is challenging to get a hospital job, it is possible providing you have good experience and a solid application. It is competitive, so without current experience in a hospital or GP role, expect to be up against candidates who DO hold that experience.

An important conclusion…
